What exactly is ChatGPT and how does it work?

ChatGPT is a prototype artificial intelligence chatbot developed in 2022 by OpenAI that specialises in dialogue. The chatbot is a large language model, tuned with both supervised and reinforcement learning techniques. It is based on OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 model, an enhanced version of GPT-3.

How does ChatGTP work?

While it may seem that the whole concept is simple, i.e. we write something down and it presents us with a solution, the truth is that it is much more complex than it may appear from the outside.

This model was trained using text databases from the Internet, including over 570 GB of data from books, Wikipedia, articles and other writings on the web. This has meant that over 300 billion different words have been used within the system.

The way it works is that of probabilities, i.e. we are talking about a model that is able to guess the next word in a sentence, which allows it to anticipate what the user is typing.

It may get it wrong, but that will also help it to add that “bug” to its database and the next time it will also consider that possibility.

After that, it gets several answers, analysing which of them is the best, depending on what the person has put in the chat, which allows it to answer much faster than any type of ChatBot we have ever used.

From here it interacts in the same way with the user, but with the great ability to learn and remember everything that person writes to it at all times, so that the next time the subject is discussed, it could even remember what was said in this conversation.

Its ability to learn is immense, which is its great advantage. However, there is one major drawback: ChatGPT currently only has knowledge of events and information up to December 2021, i.e. it cannot provide reliable answers to anything that may have happened after that date, only predictions.

Advantages

ChatGPT has a conversational interface in which we will be able to ask whatever we want, since the large Internet database it uses, in addition to the 175,000 million parameters it has, means that it can respond to anything we put to it, since it has innumerable abilities.

The revolution we are witnessing is due not only to its capacity to respond, but also to the speed with which it does so, not to mention its enormous capacity to understand everything with which it interacts.

To make it easier to understand, a normal Chatbot only has a small selection of pre-programmed automatic responses, while ChatGPT can respond directly to a query, adapt to the conversation, vary its responses depending on what the person says and even remember something we have said before.

Is ChatGTP free?

At the moment it is still completely free to use OpenIA’s system. Even so, according to Reuters data, the company headed by Sam Altman expects the platform to grow by leaps and bounds in terms of both popularity and functionality and to end the year generating 200 million dollars, to reach 1,000 million in 2024.

Even so, the costs of maintaining the system and those that it will have to incorporate in the future to continue learning, means that there is still a free version, but it has opted to open a paid version.

Paid version: how much it costs and what it offers

Open IA announced on 1 February what is called ChatGPT Plus, the paid version for 20 dollars a month.

This does not mean the disappearance of the free version, but it does mean a series of improvements with respect to this version for those who want to pay this amount of money:

  • ChatGPT priority access, even during peak hours.
  • Faster response times.
  • Be the first to try out the new features and improvements.

At the moment ChatGPT Plus will only be available in the United States, and you will have to join a waiting list to get in. It is expected to be rolled out to more countries in the near future.

It is also known that OpenIA is preparing a version for companies that will be called ChatGPT Pro. Not only that, but there will also be cheaper plans and even data packages in the future.

For all this we will have to wait and see how the paid AI evolves.
